Bobby Brown Leaning on God After Nick Gordon Verdict

Bobby Brown is leaning on God to sort through the emotions stemming from his late daughter's love interest, Nick Gordon, being found civilly liable for her untimely death.

"All I ever wanted was answers relating to who and what caused my daughter's death. Today's judgment tells me it was Nick Gordon," Brown, the 47-year-old R&B singer toldPEOPLE magazine Friday. "Now I need to process all the emotions I have and lean on God to get me and my family through this."

Brown's daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown died at the age of 22 in July 2015. Her death came six months after being found unconscious in the bathtub of the Georgia home she shared with Gordon, her former boyfriend. Earlier this year, Bobbi Kristina's estate filed a wrongful death lawsuit of $10 million against Gordon.

Last year, a $10 million wrongful death civil suit was filed against Gordon by Brown's conservator Bedelia Hargrove. The lawsuit alleged that Gordon physically abused Bobbi Kristina, stole money from her and gave her a "toxic cocktail" that led to her death.

While Gordon's decision not to show up to the proceedings ultimately led to him being named as the person liable for Bobbi Kristina's death in the civil suit, his former lawyer says the ruling doesn't prove he was involved in her death.

"As I understand it – and I am not representing Gordon – he did not have a lawyer for this civil case and because he failed to respond or to appear, the court simply granted Plaintiff's requests to assess liability," Randy Kessler, Gordon's previous lawyer, toldEntertainment TonightSaturday. "To me, that does not establish that he did anything wrong. It is not a decision on the merits."

Dealing with the death of the daughter he shared with the late singer Whitney Houston has been anything but easy for Brown. Still, he has expressed gratitude that God has kept him alive during emotional turmoil.

"The hardest thing I had to do in my life was tell my daughter to let go. My baby's gone," Brown said in an interview onABC's 20/20earlier this year. "I thank God I'm still here."

CeCe Winans, the Grammy Award winning gospel singer and godmother of Bobbi Kristina, spoke about the pain of the loss that her family and friends experienced.

"I don't think there's any words to describe a loss like that. I still can't believe it. At the same time, I guess you're just not surprised when drugs are involved in anybody's life," Winans previously toldThe Blade. "Most of the time it doesn't turn out well. I pray for the family. I still can't believe Whitney's gone, but now to see that Bobbi Kris is gone too … you just can't even come to grips with it."
