For the commandment, “Honor your father and your mother,” was the first of the Ten Commandments with a promise attached: “You will prosper and live a long, full life if you honor your parents.”
Ephesians 6:2‭-‬3 TPT

This is one of the most popular scriptures in our world today and yet the most neglected or argued because many have been hurt, abused and neglected by parents when they needed them the most. Most people grew up having issues with either their fathers or mothers because of one reason or the other but the Bible it's very clear and instructive.

It's not a request or an encouragement but a command. God's wants us to Honour our parents no matter what they have done to us. God wants us to value them, respect them, submit to them and to keep them in high esteem. That's what honor means but we have chosen to be good and respectful to them only if they were good and continue to be good to us.

It took me some time of study to realise that every time God commands us to do something, He's trying to help us and look out for us. God promises long life and a result of obeying this command but I want to put it in another perspective for you. The day we become born again we received eternal life but this life isn't long life, so God commands us to Honour our parents so that we could have both eternal life which is His life and live long on this earth. I've lost quite a few dear people in my life who died very young even though they were full of the spirit and could testify that they had eternal life. God's love for us is what makes Him give us His word so we can access Blessings He has made available. After all, we are commanded to love our enemies so if your parents are your enemies then they deserve love from you. So honor them.

PRAYER: Father I am grateful for your word today, reminding of things I must do to honour you in my life. Continue to help me practice your word in my life even when I don't want to in Jesus Precious Name Amen.
