Scripture Reading
Even my best friend, the one I trusted completely, the one who shared my food, has turned against me. Psalms 41:9

When David wrote this particular passage in Psalm 41, he probably had a man named Ahithophel in mind. Ahithophel had been a trusted advisor to David during the course of his reign. Their relationship had reached a place of confidence, assurance, and safety. But when David's son Absalom tried to take over his father's kingdom, Ahithophel betrayed David and sided with the son (2 Samuel 15:12).

Sadly, the examples of betrayal don't stop here, for all of us at one time or another have had our own Ahithophel. We've invested our trust and confidence in another person-a friend-only to be burned by them. Betrayal is one of the most painful notes on the scale of human experience, but notice what David goes on to say in the very next verse:

But You, O LORD, be merciful to me... Psalm 41:10 (NKJV)

Did you catch it? Just as David is describing the betrayal of man, he uses the word but, which marks a stark contrast to describe the Lord and His mercy. David knew what it felt like to be betrayed, but he also understood that betrayal was something God is incapable of. It's simply not in His nature.

In life, betrayal can come at us from just about any direction: from a co-worker, a friend, a family member, or even a spiritual mentor. But there's one direction that betrayal will never hit us from...above.
